Celebrating Shiraz

We enjoy Boydell’s range of four Shiraz but love tasting Shiraz from other small producers from the Hunter Valley, the Yarra, Canberra District, McLaren Vale and beyond.

OUR RANGE
  • Hunter Valley Shiraz
  • Hilltops Shiraz
  • Shiraz Pinot Noir
  • Shiraz Viognier

Each wine has it’s own unique flavours, textures and interest.

An iconic grape variety, Shiraz dates back to 1843 in Australia and is grown in almost every wine region.

The Hunter Valley is one of the most renown regions, and arguably the first region (dating back to 1843) for Shiraz. Shiraz from this warm region is medium bodied with savoury, red fruit characters.

Shiraz from the cool Hilltops region (near Young) is vibrant with intense dark, berry characters and is fuller bodied than those from the Hunter.

A diverse varietal in it’s own right, Shiraz shows wildly differing characteristics dependent on the region and climate in which it is grown. Blending Shiraz showcases it’s versatility and is a common practice across Australia. It blends well with Pinot (first crafted in the Hunter Valley in the 1900’s) adding elegance and a silky finish; Viognier to add perfume, softness and lift; it’s also blended with Grenache and Mouvedre, or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our current range crosses 3 vintages:

  • 2019 – a hot, dry growing season and harvest in the Hilltops produced robust flavours, good acidity and potential for aging.
  • 2021 – mild weather and adequate rainfall in the Hilltops, resulted in high-quality wines with excellent flavour. Wet conditions in the Hunter, required careful vineyard management leading to a successful harvest and wines with balanced acidity, and complex flavours.
  • 2022 – moderate temperatures and consistent rainfall in the Hilltops, resulted in high-quality wines with excellent flavor concentration and balance. The Hunter Valley faced wetter conditions, and disease pressure. Careful vineyard management led to a successful harvest with wines that have complex flavours and balanced acidity.

With so much diversity it’s great to enjoy them in their own right or for a bit of fun, invite a few friends around and open a few different bottles. Compare the different regions or different vintages, and take a deep dive into different blends to see how the addition of other varietals make a difference to the experience.

If you’d like to taste our line up, we are hosting a Shiraz Gruyere Truffle Brioche Experience throughout July in Cellar Door. Bookings and more details can be found via this link.

Prefer to enjoy the line up at home? We’ve curated a Shiraz Six Pack and included a $50 gift voucher so you can order an extra bottle, or two, once you decide which wine is your favourite. Chef Paula has also created the perfect Shiraz match recipe (which we’ll include with your wines) so you can prepare a meal to enjoy with your wines and great company.
